New York Yankees starting pitcher Chien-Ming Wang suffered a hamstring injury this week, and the New York Yankees have stated that he will be out of action for about a month. He will start the season on the Disabled List. Oddly enough, with Andy Pettitte’s recent back spasms, it looks like Carl Pavano will be pitching in the Bronx on Opening Day.
The New York Yankees kept Andy Pettitte out of action this week after he suffered back spasms on March 19, 2007. On Saturday, March 24, Pettitte stated that he felt very strong after a pitch and catch session. The New York Yankees don’t plan to put Pettitte on the disabled list, but he may end up missing his first scheduled start.
Philadelphia Phillies starter John Lieber strained an abdominal muscle, and as of March 25, 2007, there is no timetable for his return. If you planned on drafting Lieber, don’t do it. He will not be pitching until at least one month after Opening Day, and he is not good enough to hold up a roster spot while you wait for his return.
Cincinnati Reds centerfielder Ken Griffey, Jr. returned to his team’s lineup on Saturday, March 24. Griffey broke his left hand while playing with his children in December, 2006. The injury injury was expected to be fully healed when camp began. It wasn't. Soreness kept him out of the lineup and prompted manager Jerry Narron to raise the possibility of putting Griffey on the disabled list to start the season. It now seems that he will be ready to play in the first week of April.
Atlanta Braves starter Mike Hampton, who is suffering from a strained oblique, pitched a bullpen on Saturday, March 24, and reported no pain in the area.
New York Mets starting pitcher Orlando Hernandez, who had been suffering from arthritis in his neck and cramps in his right hamstring, went six innings in his start Friday March 23, allowing one unearned run on three hits and three walks while striking out five. He reported feeling no pain and was optimistic about starting the season in good health.
Philadelphia Phillies starter Freddy Garcia has been sidelined this week with a sore right biceps muscle. On Saturday, March 24, he threw 20 pitches in a throw and catch session. Neither the Phillies nor Garcia reported on how he felt afterwards.
St. Louis Cardinals centerfielder Jim Edmonds, who has been out all spring recovering from shoulder and toe surgeries, made his 2007 spring training debut on March 25, 2007 against the Florida Marlins and reported feeling physically healthy and hopeful to play on Opening Day.
