Fantasy Football Week One LosersDrew Brees, Lee Evans, Warrick Dunn and Steven Jackson DisappointedA whole host of fantasy football stars came up empty in Week One, including a few franchise players.
Week One Fantasy Football Quarterback LosersDrew Brees. The Thursday night matchup between the Saints and the Colts was supposed to be a preview of the Super Bowl. But with the way that Drew Brees played, it sure doesn't look like New Orleans is going to the big game in February. Brees had just 192 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. That's not good enough for a guy who was drafted in the top three in most fantasy football leagues. Not good enough. Rex Grossman. It's still to early to regret your mistake if you drafted Grossman, but if he's your guy, you better at least start thinking about a replacement. In Rex's defense, he did play against a vicious San Diego Chargers defense, and on most plays, he had almost no time to throw the football. Even so, Grossman was particularly ineffective in Week One, completing just 12 of 23 passes for 145 yards, no scores and one interception. J.P. Losman. He flat out stunk up the joint against the Denver Broncos, throwing for 97 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. Even worse, he got the ball to highly valued fantasy football wide receiver Lee Evans just once, for a whopping five yards. There is nothing like one player screwing it up for everybody. Maybe the Broncos defense is that good, but probably not. Fantasy Football Running Back BustsSteven Jackson. He is the next great fantasy football running back. Or at least, he might be. Jackson had 2,334 total yards in 2006. That's the most yards ever by a running back who isn't named Marshall Faulk. Jackson also hit paydirt 16 times last season. But in Week One, Jackson wasn't even worth a fantasy start. Against the Carolina Panthers, he had eighteen carries for 58 yards and just one catch for three yards. He scored no touchdowns. Warrick Dunn. Dunn was a victim of the Minnesota Vikings' outstanding run defense on Sunday. He carried the ball 22 times for a grand total of just 55 yards. That's not gonna help owners win many fantasy football games. On the bright side, maybe his putrid performance will result in more carries for his understudy, the younger, bigger, stronger and perhaps even better, Jerious Norwood. Reggie Bush. They didn't give him the ball much, and it showed in the stats. Bush, a second round pick in most leagues, had just 38 yards rushing and scored no touchdowns. He did catch four passes, but only gained seven yards. Bush is too talented to stay down, though. Cedric Benson. He had nowhere to run against the San Diego Chargers. Gaining just 42 yards and scoring zero touchdowns on 19 carries scares a lot of people who drafted Cedric. But next week the Bears play the Kansas City Chiefs, who gave up 73 yards to Ahman Green is Week One. So don't give up on him, but If Benson doesn't make it happen next week, his owners are in trouble. Fantasy Football Wide Receiver Week One LosersLee Evans. A lot of fantasy football owners passed over the likes of Terrell Owens and Randy Moss for this dude. Evans made them pay. He had a whopping one catch for five yards and no touchdowns. While he gave his owners the big Goose Egg, Moss and T.O. rocked the opening day party. Santana Moss. It was a terrible week for Moss. He caught just three passes for 28 yards and no scores. His famine, however, turned out to be a fantasy feast for his teammate Antione Randle El, who caught five balls for 162 yards. Fantasy Football Defense Week One LoserNew York Giants. Nobody thought New York would be confused with 1986 version of the Giants, but, geez Louise, they were awful last night against the Cowboys. The unit surrendered more yards (478) and more points (45) than any other defense in Week One. They had just one sack and forced zero fumbles. Their one interception was not enough to salvage a weak performance. Their loss of Osi Umenyiora and the play of Michael Strahan, who seems to have skipped training camp out of nothing more than sheer laziness, obviously hurt.
