Fantasy Football Week One WinnersRandy Moss, Terrell Owens and Tony Romo Were 1st Week Fantasy StudsThere were a lot of surprises in the first week of the fantasy football season. Moss, Owens, Romo, Brady and the Manning Brothers really lit it up.
Best Fantasy Football QuarterbacksTony Romo. Romo gets the nod for two reasons. First, he put up the best numbers. Secondly, he topped a lot of other quarterbacks that were picked ahead of him in most fantasy football drafts. Romo lit up the New York Giants secondary, throwing for 345 yards, four touchdowns, and just one interception. He also rushed for a score, giving him five fantasy football TDs. Eli Manning. The little brother of the game's best qarterback did his parents proud on Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys. Before going down with a shoulder injury in the end of the fourth quarter, Manning completed 28 of 41 passes for 312 yards and four touchdowns. Tom Brady. Brady meshed perfectly with his newest wideouts, Wes Welker and Randy Moss, throwing for a total of 297 yards and three touchdowns in the Patriots 38-14 blowout of the Jets. With Drew Brees faltering in Week 1, Brady made happy campers out of those fantasy football owners who drafted him ahead of the Saints quarterback. Peyton Manning. The Saints-Colts matchup was supposed to be a matchup of the game's best quarterbacks. While Brees came up almost empty (from a fantasy standpoint), Manning held up his end of the bargain, passing for 292 yards and three scores. Is anyone surprised? He is Peyton Manning, after all. Big Ben. He had four passing touchdowns. Great showing. Best Fantasy Football Running BacksJoseph Addai. It was not a good week for running backs. Only six of them topped 100 yards rushing. Nobody scored more than one touchdown. Get used to it. It's the early era of what will eventually become the norm: the two back system. Yuck. But the trend didn't hurt the Colts' Joe Addai at all. He rushed for 118 yards and one touchdown against the Saints. Chris Brown. Yup, Chris Brown. Who'd have thunk it? This dude went undrafted in a lot of fantasy football leagues. But on Sunday, Brown proved many a fantasy football genius wrong, running for 175 yards on just 19 carries. Can he keep this up? Shaun Alexander. He showed he's still got something left, running for 105 yards and a TD against a still-pretty-decent Tampa Bay defense. Owners should be happy. Marion Barber. Why, exactly, is Julius Jones still the main man in Dallas? He's not that good. On the other hand, Marion Barber, who is technically the backup, is pretty damn good. Barber had 65 yards and one touchdown on just eleven carries. He also caught one pass for 29 yards. Jones was less impressive, gaining 66 yards, but on five more carries. Look for Barber to get more touches next week. Best Fantasy Football Wide ReceiversPlaxico Burress. It's still a pretty big mystery why this guy pronounces his name "Plexico," but that's okay, so long as he keeps playing like he did on Sunday night against the Cowboys. Burress (and pal Eli Manning) took full adavantage of Jacque Reeves, who was filling in at cornerback for the injured Terence Newman. Burress caught eight passes for 144 yards and three touchdowns. Randy Moss. One of the biggest questions coming into this fantasy football season was whether or not Randy Moss was still a first tier wide receiver. He is. Nine catches, 183 yards and one touchdown proved it on Sunday. Reggie Wayne. Wayne is deadly dangerous. He's a big, fast, strong posession receiver who can also run the deep route. With Peyton Manning throwing him the ball, that makes Reggie one of the most dangerous receivers in the fantasy football world. On Thursday night, in what many thought could be a preview of Super Bowl XLII, Wayne caught seven passes for 115 yards and two scores. Terrell Owens. T.O. came into this fantasy football season with even more questions than Randy Moss. Could Tony Romo get him the ball? Would he mesh with new coach Wade Phillips? Is he mentally stable enough to play well for 16 games without causing some major controversy? In Week One, Owens answered all of his critics with two touchdowns and 87 yards receiving in a nationally televised game against the Cowboys' biigest rival, the New York Giants. He's still got it. At least this week he does. Best Fantasy Football DefenseThe Minnesota Vikings. They held the pathetic Atlanta Falcons to just three points, sacked Joey Harrington six times, picked off two passes, forced a fumble and scored two touchdowns. Sure, the Falcons are about as good as your high school's JV team, but still, the Vikes looked a heckuva lot like the Ravens of last year. _____________________
