You can turn off the lights. You can buy a hybrid car. You can even heat your home with solar energy. But it's not enough. In the months leading up to the 2008 Presidental Election, pay attention to what the Presidential candidates are saying about the environment during the upcoming election. Make sure that the candidate doesn’t come from a family that makes hundreds of million of dollars a year in the oil business. That’s probably the best idea, right there. How can a nation expect to decrease its reliance on fossil fuels when its leader is up to his neck in oil?
Keep an eye on your Congressional representative and your Senator. If they are not introducing and/or supporting environmentally-friendly policies, then send a letter. Or send five. Tell your representative that the environment is of paramount concern to you as a voter, and that you expect your voice to be heard. If everyone who favored environmental conservation sent letters to their representatives, the entire federal government would start to change. These folks in Congress don’t want to get voted out. No matter how much you may care, or how hard you work, you are still only one person.
