LaRussa Arrested for Drunk DrivingThe Skipper is in Trouble, McCann Signs Big Deal, and Sosa ReturnsThe last 24 hours in baseball have been exciting: the Yankees did not extend A-Rod's huge contract, Brian McCann gets big bucks, and La Russa falls asleep at the wheel.
LaRussa Arrested for Drunk DrivingSt. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa was arrested Thursday on a drunken driving charge after police found him sleeping inside his running SUV at a stop light. La Russa had a blood alcohol content of 0.093 percent. Florida's legal limit is 0.08 percent. Undercover officers saw La Russa's vehicle sitting at an intersection around midnight and not moving despite two green lights. Officers knocked on the window and La Russa did not initially respond. The SUV was in drive and running, with La Russa's foot on the brake, police said. When he woke up, the officers asked him to get out of the SUV. According to police, La Russa was cooperative during his arrest. The Cardinals said in a statement that the team takes "these matters very seriously" and apologized for any embarrassment and distractions. The team issued a statement saying "The Cardinals organization remains supportive of Tony". Brian McCann Signs New ContractThe Braves made a long-term commitment to Brian McCann, agreeing Thursday, March 22 to a $26.8 million, six-year contract with the All-Star catcher. The deal with McCann, who has less than two years of major league service under his belt, includes a club option for 2013. McCann hit a team-high .333 with 24 homers and 93 RBIs last season. "This is really a historical and unprecedented kind of commitment for the Atlanta Braves," general manager John Schuerholz said. "Atlanta is where I want to play. It's where I grew up," McCann said. "Not many people can say that. I don't want to be just an average big leaguer," McCann said. "I want to be a great big leaguer. This contract is just a stepping stone to where I want to be in the future." New York Yankees Don't Extend Alex Rodriguez's ContractThe Yankees won't offer Alex Rodriguez a contract extension, which allows him to opt out of his deal after the 2007 season and become a free agent. "Alex has a significant contract. The most significant in baseball history," Yankees GM Brian Cashman said Wednesday. "He has a decision to make. It's in his contract. It's a right he's earned." Rodriguez has four seasons left on the record $252 million, 10-year agreement he signed with Texas before the 2001 season. Under the terms of the deal, Rodriguez can terminate after this season. He also can stay for 2008 and have the right to opt out of the final two seasons if the Yankees don't boost his salary to $32 million annually for the final two years. Sammy Sosa Plays Against the CubsLooking fit and familiar with the No. 21 on his back, Sosa received a mixed greeting Wednesday at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, AZ, where he spent many spring afternoons during his 13 seasons with the Cubs. "You know, regardless, no matter where I play, my heart is always going to be in Chicago," Sosa said after his return with the Texas Rangers. "I don't think anyone's going to take my name away from Chicago. My name is always going to be mentioned in Chicago." Sosa went 1-for-3 in his return to Mesa, and the Cubs beat the Rangers 11-7.
