2007 Top Fantasy Football DefensesUpdated 10 Best NFL Defenses For Week 9 of National Football LeagueThe Ravens and Bears led the way last season, but after Week 8 of the 2007 NFL season, it been about the Viking, Redskins, Steelers and Giants.
This Article is Updated for Week 9 of the NFL Season. Use it to prepare your fantasy football squad for the Sunday, November 4th fantasy matchups. It's not about the best NFL defenses. It's about the Best Fantasy Football Defenses. It's about those defensive units that have scored the most fantasy football points through the first eight weeks of the year, and how they scored them. It's also about three sleeper defenses who are poised to crack some heads and run up some fantasy points in the second half of the season. First, a note to the reader on how these fantasy scores were calculated:
1. San Diego Chargers (13.3 Fantasy Football Defense Points/game). This team showed huge character in Week 8. They had to flee their homes and their regular practice facility because of the Southern California wildfires before their game against Houston. But this group is as mentally tough as any in the game, and responded with a big performance. In Week Nine they face Adrian Petersen and the Vikings. Petersen presents a tough matchup, but the Vikes are a one-dimensional team. Look for the Bolts to stop the Vikings and get at least three sacks and two turnovers. 2. Minnesota Vikings (12.5 Fantasy Football Defense Points/game). If you are in a league where defensive touchdowns count, then you want the Minnesota Vikings. They have scored an NFL high four of them already. The Vikes also rank first in the NFL in fumble recoveries with nine (9), and they are not far from the lead in interceptions with seven (7). On the other hand, they rank 12th in sacks and 12th in points allowed. So if you are in a league that gives more weight to sacks, or punishes teams for not pitching a shutout, you may hesitate to make a move for this gang. They have LT in Week 9. Only the healthy Bears have been able to stop that guy. 3. New England Patriots (11.3 Fantasy Football Defense Points/game). Maybe it's easier when you know which play is coming. That was a joke; sort of. The Patriots, who many thought would have been humbled by their Week 1 Cheating Scandal, have instead been the boldest, brashest and best team in football. It's not just their offense, either. The defense has gotten it done. Upcoming Opponents: Week 9 - Bye; Week 10 - Indianapolis. 4. New York Giants. (11.1 Fantasy Football Defense Points/game) They've beat up the 0-8 Miami Dolphins last week, but they have a Bye in Week 9 before they face Dallas in Week 10. After a tough start in which they gave up 80 points over the first two games, Big Blue has been vicious. In the past five games, they are averaging five sacks per game, which is by far the best in the NFL. They also have thirteen takeaways, three of which they ran back for touchdowns. This may be the NFL's best defense by season's end. Yet for some reason, they are still available in some fantasy leagues. Pick them up! Upcoming Opponents: Week 9 - Bye; Week 10 - Dallas 5. Tennessee Titans (11.1 Fantasy Football Defense Points/game). This team doesn't get a whole of sacks; they have just 10. Nor are they unduly stingy when it comes to surrending points; they give up 18 per game. Their skill is in forcing turnovers, a category in which they are tied for the NFL lead with 18. With three games coming up against Oakland, Carolina and Jacksonville, look for them to step up their fantasy point totals by finally getting to the quarterback and by giving up less than two touchdowns per week. 6. Seattle Seahawks (11.1 Fantasy Football Defense Points/game). This team ranks highly because of its ability to force turnovers. They rank first in the NFL with 16 takeaways (8 INT, 8 forced fumbles). They also give up just 14.2 points per game (3rd best). The Seahawks are also a sack-happy bunch: they are second best in the NFL this year with 23. Upcoming Opponents: Week 9 - Cleveland; Week 10 - San Francisco. 7. Pittsburgh Steelers (10.9 Fantasy Football Defesne Points/game). The Steel Curtain can be dominating. They shut out Seattle in Week 5. They held the high-scoring Browns to a mere seven points in Week One and the not-so-high scoring Bills to just one field goal in Week Two. They also rank second in sacks per game with three, and sixth in forced turnovers with just under two per contest. They face the offensively challenged Ravens in Week 9. Then they plays the Browns, a team they already dominated. If you've git Pitt's D, just sit back and watch the bone-crunching action. 8. Dallas Cowboys (10.7 Fantasy Football Defense Points/game). This squad is even better than it was under Bill Parcells. They are a well-balanced unit that forces turnovers (14), sacks the quarterback with regularity (18.0), and can score the occasional defensive touchdown (2). They were on a bye in Week 8, but when they return, Big D faces the woefully bad Philadelphia Eagles, who gave up 12 sacks to the Giants a few weks back. Look for the Cowboys to put up some serious defensive points in Week 9. 9. Washington Redskins (10.1 Fantasy Football Defense Points/game). The Redskins got destroyed in Week 8 against the Patriots. Forget about it. The Pats are from another planet. Remember, before Week 8, the Skins surrendered only 13.7 points per week, which was second best in the NFL. Combine that statistic with solid rankings on sacks, forced turnovers and defensive touchdowns, and you've got the second best fantasy football defense around. In Week 9, they have the Jets. They will score some serious defensive points. And the Skins D is probably available after last week's drubbing. 10. Green Bay Packers (10.1 Fantasy Football Defense Points /game). This is a good, balanced, solid unit that plays consistent football week in and week out. They will continue to do so, especially as the weather turns colder. Well, there are your ten best fantasy football defenses for Week 9. Three More Fantasy Football Defenses To WatchKansas City Chiefs (10.0 Fantasy Football Defense Points/game). The Kansas City Defense is one of the best kept secrets in the fantasy football universe. The group ranks third in sacks with 21, and third in forced turnovers with 15. It also scores as much as the celebrated Patriots with 10 defensive fantasy points per game. The Chiefs Green Bay and Denver at home in weeks 9 and 10. They should deliver big against the turnover-prone Packers and the road-challenged Broncos. Chicago Bears (7.0 Fantasy Football Poitns/game). No matter how you look at it, the Bears D has been a huge disappoinment this year. But their failure has mostly been the result of injuries to Mike Brown, Nathan Vasher, Darwin Walker and Alex Brown. While Mike Brown is out for the season, the other three guys are coming back very soon. When they arrive to take some of the heat off Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs, Da Bears will be back on top. You can get their defense off waivers in most leagues. Get them! Baltimore Ravens (8.3 Fantasy Fooball Defense Points/game). They are getting a little long in the tooth at some spots, and Ray Lewis is not the man he was in 2000 or 2003. But they are still a great unit that can force the turnover. They are on a bye in Week 8, but they return for three intra-division games. The Ravens always play these matchups very tough. Give them a chance soon. They could come up big. ____________________ Also, check out the Top Fantasy Quarterbacks, Top Fantasy Running Backs, Top Fantasy Wide Receivers, and Top Fantasy Tight Ends.
