Steroids, HGH, HCG, Winstrol, Testosterone. Welcome to the new language of baseball. For a long time it was gambling, booze and womanizing that highlighted the underbelly of our National Pastime. Then, in the 1970s and '80s it was cocaine. It seems that amphetamines have also been a drug of choice for ballplayers. But from the late 1980s until at least two years ago, when testing was implemented, it's pretty clear that the sauce has been the drug of choice.
More than a year after he was appointed by Commissioner Selig to head up the MLB's investigation into steroid and HGH use in the game, former Senator George Mitchell is finally making headway, creating headlines and keeping this long national baseball headache alive. It sucks. But what are you gonna do?
It turns out that although there is no test to dtermine if an athlete has taken Human Growth Hormone, there are internet pharmacy records. And those records have outed three players in the last few weeks as users of HGH, steroids and other fun performance enhancers.
Although Ankiel admitted that he took HGH in 2004 and 2005, he did have a prescription for it, and at the time, HGH was apparently not banned by the MLB. It seems that Glaus and Gibbons also received HGH through the mail at aboyut the same time. We will see what develops in the coming weeks, and see if anybody else has dabbled in the drugs. Oh boy. Here we go again.
